After processing about 1,000 tons of sedimented primary sludge (activity carried out by VITONE ECO), more than 150 kg of grease were recovered and sent to A&A Fratelli Parodi for conversion into biolubricants. An average recoverability of 30–40% was achieved.
At the same time, CNR IRSA found that the residual sludge consistently contained about 45 wt.% moisture, much lower than that of conventional sludge typically produced and disposed of in WWTPs. This final sludge was also microbiologically safe and showed a chemical composition comparable to defecation chalk.
A new feedstock is now being tested: sludge recovered from the degreasing unit, typically classified as EEC 190809, which contains significantly more grease than primary sludge.
